My Design Philsophy

Abigail-Anne is a sustainability-focused designer whose practice is grounded in conscious creation and innovative design processes. Committed to restoring the value of craftsmanship and creativity back into the fashion industry, she approaches design as both a responsibility and a radical act of expression. Her work challenges the perception of sustainability as a limitation, instead proving that it breeds creative evolution, revelation, and innovation.

This conceptual depth and strong set of values are encapsulated in garments that are meticulously constructed by hand. Abigail-Anne reinterprets responsible practices as a foundation for textural exploration, intricate detailing, and artistic experimentation. Each design embodies a considered balance between technical precision and boundless creativity, culminating in garments that transform concept into functional, refined, wearable artworks. As a committment to these values all her garments are made by hand in her at home studio and exclusivley uses second-hand, deadstock, recycled and remnant materials.

Her designs are created to inspire self-expression, identity, and individualism, wearable art that empowers the wearer while honouring the integrity of its making. Driven by a belief that fashion can be both visionary and responsible, Abigail-Anne creates work that values process as deeply as outcome. She reimagines sustainability as a catalyst for innovation, where craftsmanship, material exploration, and imaginative thinking converge to shape a more expressive, conscious, and creatively liberated future for fashion.

My story

My name is Abigail Anne Laforest (Abby), born and raised in Sydney, Australia. I have always been the girl in her room absorbed in a DIY project. What began as playful creativity has evolved into a deep love for everything creative, drawing, painting, pottery, sewing, styling and more.

This creativity naturally led me toward career in fashion. After high school, I completed a Certificate III in Fashion and Graphic Design at TAFE, where I discovered a love for the hands-on design process. Desiring a broader understanding of the industry, I went on to complete a Bachelor of Business (Fashion and Global Brand Management) at ICMS in 2025. Throughout my degree, I gained invaluable insight from industry professionals and hands-on experience through internships, observing the operations, strategies, and production processes of fashion labels firsthand.

Alongside my studies a kept my creative flare alive by founding my own design label, creating and selling custom, one-of-a-kind pieces. This venture has become my greatest teacher. It has pushed me to apply my academic knowledge in real time to market collections, utilise social media, build and manage an e-commerce platform, style editorial shoots, analyse trends, and interpreate customer data. It taught me disciline, adaptability and resilience as I faced the realities of running a fashion business beyond the classroom.

Through this journey, I have developed a distinct design style featuring multifaceted, adjustable womenswear. I design with comfort and confidence in mind, creating pieces that empower the wearer while allowing versatility in expression. Personally drawn to experimenting across aesthetics and styles, from elegant femininity to streetwear edge, I reflect that same fluidity in my work, embracing contrast and range within a cohesive design identity.

My values

My biggest identifier in my design philosophy is sustainable design.

As I developed both personally and professionally, a strong passion for sustainability emerged. Learning about the environmental and ethical impact of the fashion industry pushed me to take responsibility within my own practice and aspire to meaningful change.

Sustainability is not a marketing angle for me, nor is it a concept I put on a resume to puff myself up.

Sustainability is an intentional, core value and design principle I hold dearly, personally and professionally.

Since founding my label, I have prioritised quality, longevity, and the exclusive use of second-hand, remnant, and recycled materials. Partnerships i have formed with Sydney brands, have made this viable by repurposing their over-ordered fabrics and offcuts, transforming waste into elevated new designs.

As such, my dream to be a designer that helps brands intergrate sustainable systems into designs without compromising creativty or profitability. By contributing to these brands that want to implement viable, transparent sustainable practices, eliminating the need to greenwash and prove that sustainability can enhance design rather than limit it. I truely believe it is possible to balance environmental responsibility, commercial profitable realities and next level designs.

What sets me apart as a designer is my comprehensive understanding of garment production. I design, pattern-make, sample, and sew every piece myself, giving me a meticulous attention to detail and a deep technical knowledge of construction and function. Combined with my business education and sustainability focus, this allows me to approach design holistically, from concept to production to market positioning.

Ultimately, I aspire to bring dedication, innovation, and integrity to every role I take on. Being able to create thoughtfully, joyfully, responsibly, and passionately, that is the real dream.
